Core Business

NBI's core business is to manufacture pharmaceutical products from human plasma, using a process of cold ethanol fractionation.

The majority of NBI's requirement plasma is met from local sources, including the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS).

The products made are distributed throughout South Africa, and where surpluses exist, to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and other developing countries.

NBI and SANBS together strive to achieve the Department of Health's goal of ensuring the self-sufficiency of blood, blood products and plasma-derived medicinal products for all patients in South Africa. To this end, we endeavour to provide products and services from regional resources using plasma from healthy, voluntary donors.

By purchasing plasma from the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS), NBI is able to financially contribute to maintaining an excellent standard of blood transfusion to South African patients. NBI acknowledges the vital role that the Blood Donors and Blood Transfusion Services throughout South Africa play in the supply of quality plasma for the manufacture of our plasma-derived medicines.
